“GRAMMAR”

1. Language learning does not start with grammar, it starts with listening
2. Grammar is not necessary for communication in English
Language learning really begins with parroting, or repeating what you hear.  The meaning is extracted slowly and once you can transmit this meaning you can begin to interchange and exchange the various parts of learned phrases.  By experimenting like this your teacher (and your brain!) will help you to assimilate a set of rules. 
Another useful angle is to imagine yourself speaking to a foreigner in your native tongue. When you hear non-natives speaking to you and their words are not grammatically correct, you can usually piece together what the person is trying to say. The same is true for you speaking in English. So speak first. Get confidence through improving your fluency. Don’t worry about the grammar. It will come.
At its most simple, the steps to beginning (and continuing) your language learning are
1. Repeat – parrot the phrases you hear
2. Produce – begin to use the phrases to communicate your own information
3. Experiment – play with the structures by exchanging the words.

Sentence Templates
Take a very simple phrase such as

“What did you do?”
We note from above that the first step is to repeat and learn the phrase.  The next step is to begin to substitute different words to learn how to use them. 

“What did he do?”
“What did she do?”
“What did they sing?”
“What did they write?”
“Why did they write?”

You can continue this pattern and for all stages of learning.  It provides a solid lexical methodology for utilizing your vocabulary while at the same time becoming familiar with a grammar structure.  Notice how much faster you can learn using this method.  It’s a better way to go and you can apply it to any grammar structure no matter how complex.

The last step is to do exercises thinking in the other language and occasionally vocalize (speak out) certain sentences. This will allow your brain to get used to your new way of thinking.

The steps (and exercises) for eliminating redundant steps in learning a language therefore are as follows:

STEP 1: Each day take 15 minutes to practice thinking in the different language

STEP 2: Do not allow yourself to subvocalize anything in English during this exercise

Remember when you were 5?

As children you will notice that we all have innate abilities for learning. We have a desire and a curiosity that drives us to investigate. As one author puts it

However, we believe it is appropriate, after you have a good idea of your own goals, to try and answer the following question;

Are you learning English because somebody else says you should or can you see why this is a genuinely beneficial thing to do?

Now remember, learning is never a waste. You will always find a use for either for the material itself or the process of learning it at some point in your life. But right now we want you to learn English faster and more successfully. To help us do that you need to find your own motivation and where it comes from.

This is also called “the silent period.” Sounds scary doesn’t it? But unlike the term suggests it doesn’t mean that you won’t be speaking. Students here have a receptive vocabulary. Through contextual cues and activities communication will take place. However, learners at this stage are not really producing language but are parroting. The importance of parroting is enormous and goes back to the importance of mental rehearsal. Imagine yourself mentally rehearsing the phrases you hear in class 20 times as you walk to the green grocers. This type of mental rehearsal, above anything else, will move students from this stage faster.
Teachers at this level focus attention on listening comprehension activities and on building a receptive vocabulary. The social environment is crucial at this stage.

Stage II: Early production
Active vocabulary = 1000 words

This stage may last up to six months. During this stage, students can usually speak in one- or two-word phrases. This phase is where we begin to develop methods for assimilating language quickly. Trial and error is a slow way to learn. Wouldn’t it be better to first develop the skills needed to learn and organize new vocabulary and manipulate new grammar ideas? Doing this makes learning easier and speed. Although production of language maybe low here, your rate of learning is very rapid indeed.

Stage III: Speech emergence
Active vocabulary = 3000 words

Students can communicate with simple phrases and sentences. They will understand easy stories read in class with the support of pictures. They will also be able to do some content work with teacher support. Here are some tasks they can complete:

· Read short, modified texts in content area subjects.
· Match vocabulary words to definitions.
· Study flashcards with content area vocabulary.
· Participate in duet, pair and choral reading activities.

Stage IV: Intermediate fluency
Active vocabulary = 6000 words

Students are beginning to use more complex sentences when speaking and writing and are willing to express opinions and share their thoughts. They will ask questions to clarify what they are learning in class. Generally this is also the stage where students will increasingly begin to enjoy reading source commercial texts (newspapers, magazines). Reading source English literature also becomes more accessible to learners.

Stage V: Advanced Fluency

This broad category encompasses learners from Upper Intermediate onwards, and can cover a learner period from two to five years or more. Students at this level can exchange information and converse with peers and workmates at a level sufficient to make very few communication errors and will be able to enjoy source material from books, films, magazines etc. in English. Memorize these consonants. The consonants can have a different sound than what is written above as you can
